Kathrin Welte (Sterntaler Designs)

Kathrin Welte (Sterntaler Designs)

Kathrin is a Fredericton NB based artist and musician. A trained classical singer by profession, Kathrin has balanced a performance and teaching career since graduating with a Master of Music in voice performance from McGill University in 2008.

Parallel to this, Kathrin has always practiced her artistic interests in watercolor illustration and fibre arts, drawing inspiration from nature and its many colours and textures. In the past years she has developed a focus on needle felting, both in two and three dimensional forms. She creates a variety of animals, wall hangings and ornaments from wool, frequently combining them with other natural items foraged in the woods like branches, lichens, flowers or feathers. The subjects of her two-dimensional wool "paintings" focus on local flora and fauna.

The Process of Painting with Wool

The idea of painting with wool came about as an extension and combination of Kathrin's love for three-dimensional needle felting and watercolour painting. She finds the medium of wool well suited for depicting subjects from nature, such as animals and flowers. The careful layering, arranging and securing of different coloured fibres is a slow and meticulous process. Sometimes a single wool fibre can make the difference in the expression of a subject. The felting needle is used carefully for the top layers of the pieces in order to conceal the needle marks and achieve a texture effect that is soft, smooth and inviting.
