Collection: Fish by Fire Raku
Fish by Fire are designed by New Brunswick artist Karin Bach and produced at Tim Isaac Pottery. Each piece is forged through fire and water, in a firing technique known as Raku.
The tradition of Raku originated in 16th century Japan and spread to the west in the mid-20th century. It has evolved into a dramatic technique where the intuition and skill of the artist are involved directly with the firing process. Once brought to temperature, pieces are carefully removed from a red hot kiln using long metal tongs. They are then placed in some combustable material which bursts into flame upon contact.
After approximately one hour in this enclosed reduction chamber, pieces are taken from the ashes and quenched in water. Finally, they are scrubbed with sand to reveal the wonderful and unique surface effects that have been created.
