Your Oriole is crafted entirely from glass - no paints, glazes or moulds. The shape was designed and hand-cut with layers of coloured crushed glass built up on the clear shape before firing in a kiln over many hours. The bird comes with his own detachable driftwood perch that has been sanded on the underside for stability. Simply slot the birds legs into the holes in the top side of the wood.

Handcrafted in Nova Scotia with artisan studio-glass made in Nova Scotia.

"I established The Glass Bakery®in Nova Scotia in 2010. Drawn by expansive wilderness and nature's escape, I followed my heart to Canada, and after a lifetime in science, discovered art and glass fusing.
Following the loss of my beloved dog Hudson, I began to enjoy the birds in the garden. These little moments of happiness led to creating glass birds. Through my glass birds, I hope you too will smile and enjoy the moment.
Each bird is handcrafted, first by designing and cutting shapes from clear glass then building layers of finely powdered coloured glass between the clear. Next, pieces are kiln-baked, fused at ultra high temperatures then carefully cooled for resilience. No paints, glazes or moulds are used. No two birds are the same." - Cara Wedgebrow

Product Questions:
There are small bubbles in my glass, what are these?
Tiny air bubbles - "Champagne Bubbles" are a common feature of fused glass. While glass artists take steps using production to avoid large bubbles or craters that may be unsightly, distracting or weaken the piece, small bubbles are inherent. The are usually not considered a "fault" and their presence, absence and desirability is a personal choice in aesthetic. Some artists may also choose to create bubbles using chemical reactions or physical placement of glass components.
Many people find these small bubbles a desirable feature which adds to the uniqueness of the piece. The bubbles (if any) are often more visible on transparent or semi-opaque glass and also when the piece is held up to the light. Bubbles may not be present on every piece.
Where does your driftwood and log bird perches come from?
All the logs and driftwood perches are collected and cut by me or family members. The Driftwood is collected from the shore of Atlantic Canada and is cleaned then air dried. The logs are hand-harvested, usually from our property as part of natural pruning and garden maintenance or trail maintenance. The logs are protected using a non-toxic (but not food-grade) preservative to help keep the bark attached to the wood.

Can the birds keep me company outside?
Although the glass was designed for indoor use, some products will be fine outdoors with basic commonsense use, e.g. hanging birds and coasters. The birds with wire legs and perches are best kept indoors in a wind and motion-free environment.
