What is
Sgraffito?
Sgraffito is a decorative pottery technique where scratching through a coating
on a hard surface reveals parts of another underlying coating in a contrasting colour.
By applying two successive layers of contrasting glaze or slip to an unfired ceramic body, this allows the the first layer to be easily carved into while revealing a completely new colour underneath!
The word sgraffito comes from the Italian word graffiare, which means 'to scratch'.
